[RECAP]: KUN’s Search for Identity in New York
Review & photo by Crystal Li.
On a hot and humid night in New York City, KUN (蔡徐坤) took the stage at Terminal 5 to a crowd that had already proven its devotion long before the first note was sung. IKUNs (KUN’s official fandom name) filled all three levels of the venue with no room to spare. The ones at the barricade lined up more than 24 hours in advance just to secure their spot in the front row. They were decked out in custom banners and merch, showing their undying dedication to the artist. The energy was endearing, even if the venue’s layout made visibility a challenge for many in attendance.

But for those who could see and hear him, KUN put on a performance that was worth the hype.
Throughout the night, KUN’s vocals stood out as the strongest element of the show. Compared to earlier stages in his career, there was a noticeable stability and control in his delivery, showing he is now an artist who has grown more confident in his craft.
Released in 2020, 情人 - Lover was clearly a fan favorite. And to close out the night, Deadman, the number-one hit from his latest namesake all-English album, KUN, was a crowd-pleaser and an instant classic.

Before performing Washed Away, KUN addressed the audience with a statement that lingered long after the show ended: “Most of you might know me as an idol… that’s okay…But I want to wash my past.”
It was a striking moment that hinted at an artist eager to redefine himself, but what does that reinvention mean? For many in the room, KUN’s identity as an idol is inseparable from who he is as an artist. He rose to fame in the 2018 Chinese talent audition program Idol Producer, where he was voted as the winner and became the center of the boy group Nine Percent. IKUNs supported him from the very beginning, voting and investing emotionally in his rise as an idol. To distance himself from that label, even subtly, introduces a tension between the foundation that built his career and the artist he is striving to become.

Yet, perhaps that tension is precisely the point.
KUN’s current musical direction signals a deliberate shift. The production quality, the tone of the set, the way he works with his band, and the emotional weight of his performance all suggest an artist moving toward something more intentional and self-defined. Whether or not that requires a complete separation from his “idol” identity remains an open question, but his desire for growth is very apparent.

If anything, An Evening With KUN felt less like a definitive statement and more like a step in a new direction. Between the unwavering support of his loyal fandom and his own vision as an artist, KUN stands at a crossroads where he is honoring where he came from, and deciding where he wants to go next.
And judging by the crowd that wrapped around every level of the venue, wherever that path leads, his audience is more than willing to follow.
We can’t wait to see the next step of his journey.
